National Environmental Monitoring Department of the Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources announced results of monitoring conducted in the second ten days of May in trans-border rivers of Kura and Araz and their trans-border branches. Press service of the ministry told APA the flow rate in the Kur River in the second ten-day of May reduced by 31 cbm/sec and made up 535 cbm/sec.

As a result of trans-boundary pollution of Kura River in Georgia and Armenia with industrial and domestic wastes, coagulation of biogenic substances exceeded normal level for many times. Phenol and copper compounds exceeded the maximum permissible concentration.

Phenol pollution exceeds MPC by 3 times and copper compounds by 2 times in the Shikhli-2 area, phenols exceeded MPC by 2 times and copper compounds by 2 times in the Aghstafachay River, phenols exceeded MPC by 2 times and copper compounds by 3 times in the Aghstafa Reservoir.

According to the monitoring, the flow rate in the Araz River, which borders on Armenia, made up 109 cbm/sec. Phenols and copper compounds exceeded MPC by 3 and 2 times respectively in Horadiz area of the River, copper compounds and phenols exceeded MPC by 3 times Shahseven I, copper compounds exceeded MPC by 3 and phenols by 2 times in Bahramtapa. Oxygen concentrations in equilibrium with the air range from about 5.17 mg/liter to 6.11 mg/liter.
