Baku. Ilhama Isabalayeva – APA. Central Clinic Hospital’s chief doctor Kamran Musayev gives an interview to APA.

-How important was the “Baku Cardio-Days” congress for Azerbaijan?

-The congress held on the occasion of Heydar Aliyev’s birthday was organized by the Azerbaijan Cardiovascular Surgery Society. More than 70 delegates from 15 countries attended the first congress. First of all it was important for us to prove to the world that we can organize such event. On the other hand, this congress was dedicated to the most topical problems of the cardiology and cardio-surgery. There was an opportunity to discuss the problems of cardiology with the foreign experts. It will enable the local experts to improve their skills and will promote the development of cardiology and cardio-surgery in Azerbaijan.

- How is the situation of heart diseases in Azerbaijan? What disease is the most topical today?

- Despite the progress in the field of cardiology and cardio-surgery, the heart diseases take first place among the fatal diseases in the world. The World Health Organization’s statistics also confirmed it. This issue was discussed once more at the Baku congress. The U.S. and Italian experts regrettably noted that the cardiovascular problems, particularly ischemia were not reduced. Of course, there is a progress in the heart treatment, but despite that the number of ischemia patients was not reduced.

- Do you expect for novelties in the heart transplantation?

- One of the congress’s units was dedicated to this problem. We invited the best doctors specialized on the heart transplantation to the congress. We discussed the achievements in this field. I believe that we can use these achievements for heart transplantation in Azerbaijan too.

-What impedes cardiac transplantation in Azerbaijan?

-Cardiac transplantation should not be regarded only as an operation. There are specialists and hospitals that can perform cardiac transplantation in Azerbaijan. But cardiac, generally body transplantation is a complex problem. It has social and legal sides. It is not right to perform cardiac transplantation without solving legal and social sides of the problem. If we start the work before solving the legal and social sides of the problem, it will create problems for surgeons. Therefore, relevant legal problems of donor and patient should be solved.

-What issues should be regulated to solve legal and social problems?

-First of all, the donor’s brain death must be confirmed and his relatives must give written agreement.

-How much is the cardiac transplantation expected to cost?

-Time will show everything. We plan such an operation and there is no reason not to perform this operation.

-Central Clinic Hospital applies medical innovations in Azerbaijan first of all. What other innovations are expected?

-There are innovations in the cardiac surgery every year. As an example I can show the operations in the field of arrhythmia. We have fully established arrhythmia service in the Central Clinic Hospital. This is innovation in Azerbaijan. Moreover, artificial heart devices will be used in Azerbaijan and Central Clinic Hospital soon. Artificial devices are the only way out for the patients suffering from artificial heart failure. Artificial heart devices are used in the last stage of the heart failure. This device may be used after the operation. This device may also be transplanted to the patients, who have not undergone surgery, but suffer heart failure because of various reasons.
