Pope Leo XIV has been bestowed with the symbols of papal authority — the “Fisherman’s Ring” and the woolen pallium adorned with crosses. This ancient ceremony marks the official beginning of the pontificate of the 267th Pope of Rome, APA reports citing the Holy See’s press office.
The inauguration mass — which included the papal homily, the “Queen of Heaven” prayer, and a concluding blessing — was personally led by Leo XIV. According to the Holy See’s press office, nearly 150,000 believers gathered in the square. Delegations from more than 150 foreign countries, members of royal families, and representatives of various religious denominations were also in attendance. In addition to Christian confessions, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist communities were also represented.
The current head of the Roman Catholic Church will turn 70 on September 14 of this year. Pope Leo himself stated that the focus of his service on the Throne of Saint Peter will be issues of social justice and conflict resolution in the context of the digital revolution.
In his homily, Leo XIV called for unity within the Church, describing it as the foundation of peaceful coexistence. “Today, we witness many conflicts and the wounds caused by hatred, violence, stereotypes, fear of others, economic models that exploit Earth’s resources and leave the poor behind,” he said.
It should be noted that the Chairwoman of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Sahiba Gafarova, participated in the ceremony.
