“Azerbaijan has always been a tolerant and multicultural country where all citizens, regardless of their nationality or region, live as one family,” said Bishop Alexiy of the Baku and Azerbaijan Eparchy at the 5th session dedicated to the 5th anniversary of the Commemoration Day of Religious Confessions in Azerbaijan, organized by the Caucasus Muslim Board.
He said that during the Patriotic War, Orthodox Christians, together with their Muslim and Jewish brothers, raised their voices to defend their homeland from the invaders: “Many Russian citizens also fought during the First Karabakh War. Among them were Yuri Kovalev and Igor Makeyev, who became National Heroes of Azerbaijan. Denis Pronin and Dmitry Solntsev lost their lives in the Second Karabakh War. We will always remember their names and pray to God for the repose of their souls. But while remembering the martyred heroes, we must not forget that people of different nationalities who returned to their homeland with victory live alongside us. Many of them were injured, underwent rehabilitation, were treated for a long time and were later able to return to their previous lives. I have met with them.”
Alexiy noted that the victory in the Patriotic War is of great importance for our country: "It allowed us to return the lost territories, ensure security, and create conditions for economic development in the regions. Our government has launched a program to restore infrastructure, build new roads, schools, and hospitals. Residents of the regions liberated from occupation were able to return to their homes and start a new life. In addition, the victory strengthened Azerbaijan's international reputation and demonstrated its ability to defend its territory and population against external threats."
