Baku. Victoria Dementieva-APA. The European Court of Human Rights made a decision on the case of Azerbaijani Journalist Ramiz Najafli. The court held that Azerbaijan was to pay the applicant 10,000 euros (EUR) in respect of non-pecuniary damage and EUR 3,000 for costs and expenses, APA reports quoting the Press Service of the ECHR.

The Azerbaijani citizen Ramiz Huseyn oglu Najafli, born in 1967 and the editor of editor-in-chief of a newspaper named Boz Qurd appealed the ECHR stating that he had been beaten with truncheons by a group of police officers while observing the demonstration On 9 October 2005. Relying on Article 3 (prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment), Mr Najafli complained that he had been beaten up by police and that the authorities had failed to carry out an effective investigation, letting those police officers responsible go unpunished. Under Article 10 (freedom of expression), he further alleged that the police officers’ intention had been to prevent him from covering the demonstration.
