110 journalists killed worldwide in 2009

A total of 110 journalists were killed because of their work in 2009, making last year the most lethal in the past decade for journalists, the International Press Institute (IPI) revealed on Thursday, with the release of its World Press Freedom Review 2009 – Focus on the Middle East & North Africa.
The report called it “decade of death” with 735 journalists killed worldwide because of their jobs. Asia was the most dangerous region of the world for journalists this decade, with 238 journalists, or 33% of all the decade’s victims, murdered there. The second most lethal region for journalists this decade was the Middle East & North Africa. A total of 202 journalists were killed there this decade – 27% of the global total for 2000 to 2009. The Americas rank just behind the Middle East & North Africa, in third place, at 22%, with 162 journalists killed this decade.

Iran leads the list of countries with arrested journalists. More than 100 journalists have been arrested since the protest actions against the result of presidential elections in June, 2009. Tens of journalists are waiting for court decisions in jails.
IPI also expressed concern over the situation of journalists in conflict countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Pakistan.
