The COP29 event and its preparation process were exemplary, as the most challenging issue—finance—was at the center of attention, said Csaba Kőrösi, President of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, during the opening day of the 2nd Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW), APA-Economics reports.
According to him, financial issues are always difficult in UN negotiations, because each country has to go back and explain this to its own parliament and ministry of finance: "The COP29 Presidency managed to achieve what seemed to be an almost impossible compromise. That is why the agreement reached was a historic one. Before COP29, there was a question: are such large-scale events really necessary?
Does the participation of 70–100 thousand people really help make effective decisions?
Isn’t the carbon footprint of such an event too large?
Are the funds spent on it truly worth it?
But Baku has shown that yes, these events are necessary — because the involvement of the business community, civil society, cities, and communities in the process is extremely important," he added.
