Azerbaijan’s regions have great potential for tourism development, Anna Soave, Head of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Office in Azerbaijan said during a panel discussion held as part of the 2nd Azerbaijan International Investment Forum, APA reports.
Soave said that tourism development in Azerbaijan should not be limited to well-known destinations and that tourism opportunities in other cities and regions of the country should also be expanded.
She noted that Azerbaijan’s historic cities, settlements, cultural landscapes, forests, mountains and rich multicultural heritage create significant opportunities for tourism and investment.
According to the UN-Habitat official, infrastructure projects are improving access to these locations and creating new investment opportunities. In her view, proper urban and territorial planning is important in determining where and on what scale construction should be permitted and which areas should be protected.
“Tourism development in Azerbaijan should not be limited to well-known destinations. The country’s historic cities, settlements, cultural landscapes, forests, mountains and rich multicultural heritage create significant opportunities for tourism and investment,” she said.
She said it is important for tourism projects to benefit local residents and communities. Turning locations into areas intended solely for tourists may generate short-term revenues, but carries the risk of weakening the long-term value of those places.
