Bakı. Nicat Mustafayev - APA-Economics. Skytrax announced the winners of its annual World Airline Awards this month, with trophies being handed out to Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways, amongst other carriers. In total, ten finalists were short-listed for the prestigious Airline of the Year category and the winner was selected following a 10-month survey with more than 17.9 million air travellers from over 100 different nationalities taking part between July 2009 and April 2010, e-Global Travel News (blog) reported.

Asiana Airlines, the nation’s second-largest passenger carrier, was chosen as the Airline of the Year at the 2010 Skytrax World Airline Awards held in Hamburg, Germany, on Thursday. It was the first time the company had won the honor.

Behind Asiana Airlines at the top spot was Singapore Airlines in second and Qatar Airways in third.

Other airlines that have ranked first in the past include Cathay Pacific in 2009, Singapore Airlines in 2007 and 2008 and British Airways in 2006.
