Connecticut Mayor Donates Kidney to Facebook Friend‎
# 23 April 2010 10:51 (UTC +04:00)
Carlos Sanchez, a 44-year-old father, decided to post on his Facebook status that he needed a kidney after his friends and family had been tested and he couldn’t find a match, AP reports. He had been hesitant about writing the status because he didn’t want people to pity him, but he did it on his doctor’s suggestion. After seeing the post, Capone Almon privately messaged him saying that she would get tested to see if she could be a donor.

Capone Almon, a Democrat, was running for a second term as mayor at the time but kept the details of her medical plans a secret. She won the election as they awaited word on when she could donate the kidney, saying they grew as close as family during the lull.

After a number of tests, the operation happened on April 8, when Capone Almon’s left kidney was transplanted into Sanchez.

Although friends and family ask if Capone Almon is nervous that her one kidney will someday fail, she says she is confident in modern medicine and her own health that she will be fine.
