Baku - APA-Economics. April 22, 2010 - Smoke and ash bellow from EyjafjallajÃ¶kull volcano as it is seen from Hella, Iceland. Hundreds of thousands of travellers were left stranded across the globe by the shutdown which began April 15, having to shell out for hotels, food and alternative travel arrangements, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

U.S. Air Force officials warned their biggest fighter wing in Europe could suffer long-term damage if Iceland’s volcano keeps belching ash into the skies.

The Air Force sent two F-15 fighters on test flights Wednesday and another eight on Thursday. Although the fighters did not encounter any major problems, they did not come down clean.
