An organized smuggling group attempting to illegally transport a large quantity of narcotics into Azerbaijan via the Caspian Sea has been intercepted, APA reports, citing the Press Center of the State Border Service.

On May 1 at 21:55, the Main Command and Control Center of the Coast Guard detected an unidentified high-speed vessel moving rapidly 0.3 miles from the shore in the direction of Salyan Bay in the Caspian Sea.

To detain the vessel, a pursuit operation was launched by a patrol ship guarding the state border. Coastal units were alerted, and measures were taken to seal off the shoreline. During the search and pursuit operations conducted in the southeastern part of Azerbaijan's territorial waters, the patrol ship issued stop signals using lights and sound at 22:40. A warning shot was also fired.

The intruders ignored the legal orders and attempted to flee Azerbaijan’s territorial waters. In accordance with the law “On the State Border of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” weapons were used, resulting in both border violators being wounded.

Emergency medical measures were taken to evacuate the injured.

Despite doctors' efforts, one of the intruders died.

The other intruder is currently receiving treatment at a modern medical facility.

Inspection of the intercepted high-speed liner-type boat revealed 33.075 kilograms of marijuana, two “Garmin” GPS devices, and one “Thuraya” satellite phone.

Preliminary investigation identified the border violators as citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran: Garanijat Nuri Qurban Mohammad (born 1985, wounded) and Umehammadi Behsad Saleh (born 1990, deceased).

Operational-investigative measures are ongoing.
