An event titled "Mine-Free World - Civil Society Initiatives" was held at the State Support Agency for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in connection with International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, APA reports.
Representatives of NGOs operating in Azerbaijan participated in the event.
Elnur Baghirli, head of the Project Management Department at the Agency, stated that in recent years, financial assistance has been allocated to non-governmental organizations working in this field, and their project implementation has been supported.
He highlighted that during the post-conflict period, 387 Azerbaijani citizens have lost their lives or health due to mine explosions.
According to the agency official, recent statistics show that there have been nearly 4,000 mine victims in Azerbaijan overall.
Umud Mirzayev, head of the International Eurasia Press Fund, noted that in recent years, the number of mine victims has increased globally due to conflicts.
He stated that in Azerbaijan, civil society plays an important role alongside government agencies in the fight against mine terrorism.
At the end of the event, a film about the danger of landmines, prepared by the "Gilavar Photo Club" Public Union with the support of the State Support Agency for Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs) was screened.
