Asif Mammadov, chairman of the public organization “National-Cultural Autonomy of Azerbaijanis” in Russia’s Ivanovo region, has been stripped of Russian citizenship, APA’s Russia bureau reports, citing local media.

The decision was made by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).

The reason cited was “activities posing a threat to national security.”

In September 2025, Asif Mammadov sought to run for a seat in the Ivanovo City Duma and was registered as a candidate. However, following an online scandal that erupted after this information was published, the Ivanovo Election Commission annulled his registration.

The revocation of Russian citizenship of leaders of Azerbaijani diaspora organizations in Russia has become a recurring issue. Previously, the Russian citizenship of diaspora leaders in the Arkhangelsk, Moscow and Ulyanovsk regions, the city of Moscow, and several other regions had been revoked.
