Azerbaijan frees 5,638 from prison, lifts other penalties for 9,215

As a result of the implementation of the Amnesty Act, 5,638 individuals were released from imprisonment, while 9,215 others were relieved of alternative penalties, Namig Aliyev, Senior Prosecutor of the Department for Non-Criminal Prosecution Proceedings at the Prosecutor General’s Office, said during an “Open Door Day” event held at the new administrative building of the Binagadi District Prosecutor’s Office, APA reports.

According to him, 7,703 individuals sentenced to restriction of liberty were released from serving their punishment. Among those granted amnesty, nine individuals had been sentenced to confinement in a disciplinary military unit. In addition, the Amnesty Act was applied to 146 persons sentenced to restriction in military service, 685 persons sentenced to corrective labor, 68 persons sentenced to community service, and 604 persons sentenced to deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities.

Furthermore, individuals convicted of crimes not posing great public danger who had been sentenced to fines, as well as 878 persons fined up to 3,000 manats, were exempted from serving their fines.
