Garalov said the Soviet troops burst into Baku on January 20, 1990, committed grave crimes against the civilians, 132 were killed, 612 wounded, thousands of people were illegally arrested.
“The then leadership did not take necessary steps in connection with the facts, the grave crime did not receive a political assessment. The criminal case launched on the servicemen was cancelled,†he said.
Garalov said after Heydar Aliyev returned to Azerbaijan, the tragedy received its legal assessment and the criminal cases were restored.
“Since Abdurrahman Vazirov, Ayaz Mutallibov and Vagif Huseynov had a hand in these crimes, decision was passed to hold them accountable,†he said.
Prosecutor General added that 68-volume criminal case launched on the servicemen who participated in committing the tragedy had not been given back to Azerbaijan.
