Former police chief charged with assassination plans against Azerbaijani President goes on trial

According to APA, prosecutor Murvat Hasanov read indictment at the process on Friday presided over by Judge Karamat Aliyev.

According to the indictment, Mammadali Aliyev is charged with anti-government actions, assassination attempt against the president, helping former defense minister Rahim Gaziyev, Baba Nazarli, Alikram Humbatov and Arif Pashayev to crush out from an isolator of the Ministry of National Security. Aliyev together with OMON commander Elchin Amiraslanov prepared plan of terrorist attack to assassinate the countryâ€™s president. They came to terms about that in 1994 in Moscow. He participated in organizing of a group of Dagestanâ€™s rebel OMON officers in that year and preparing terrorist attack against the President Heydar Aliyevâ€™s plane. Mammadali Aliyev is charged with articles 17.185, 70-2, 17, 15.93-9, 17.15.94 of the then Criminal Code of Azerbaijan and 28.277, 29.32.2, 277, 32.2, 232.2.1 and 278 of the present one.

Aliyev was detained in 2009.

During the court testimony, Aliyev said that he was partly guilty in accompanying the persons crushing out from the Ministry of National Securityâ€™s isolator to Moscow, but he didnâ€™t admit guilt in seizure of power and assassination attempt against the president. â€œFormer officer of the Defense Ministry Murad Sadaddinov was my father-in-lawâ€™s neighbor in summer cottage. I met Rahim Gaziyev at the Defense Council. I was working deputy police chief in Binagadi district. When I got arms I gave it to the council. I attended funeral of Murad Saddadinovâ€™s father. He told that the Ministry of National Security intended to kill Rahim Gaziyev, Baba Nazarli, Alikram Humbatov and Arif Pashayev and they should avoid it and we need to help them to disappear. In the evening I met with those persons near Jeyran cafÃ© in Absheron district. Faiq drove the car. Then I drove them to Khirdalan. I contacted with Ibad Adigezalov and they saw off Alikram Humbatov to Lanakaran, others stayed there. Baba Nazarli gave me an address in Moscow and asked to meet them there. We saw off them to Moscow in convoy vehicle, but I left by plane. I stayed at that address for a day and then met them in Moscow. When I returned to Baku I heard about the detainment of Alikram Humbatov and understood that the situation is bad and therefore I escaped from the countryâ€.

As regards the shooting at Heydar Aliyevâ€™s aircraft, the defendant did not admit the accusation.
â€œThe National Security Ministry searched the summerhouse ten times. I did not want to shoot at Heydar Aliyev. I do not have any relations with Elchin Amiraslanov, because when I was in Moscow Ayaz Mutallibov phoned me and said Elchin Amiraslanov was in Russia and told me not to meet with him. I said I could not have any relations with him. It was difficult to live with the old passport in Moscow. Thatâ€™s why I came to Dagestan. It was comfortable to live there,. I have serious health problems, I have pains in my heart,â€ he said.
Mammadali Aliyev said he returned to Azerbaijan in connection with the accusation on killing of Javanshir Piriyev.
â€œJavanshir was my godfather. Why should I have killed him? I returned to Azerbaijan as I was accused of committing this crime. Otherwise, no one could arrest me,â€ he said.

The hearing will continue on January 18.

Mammadali Aliyev was accused of kidnapping Javanshir Piriyev together with his car GAZ-2410 and killing him on April 13, 1993. While giving testimony in the main investigation department of the National Security Ministry Haji Mammadov said Mammadali Aliyev had committed the crime. But later this accusation was lifted from Mammadali Aliyev.
