Richard Morningstar: â€œOf course, we want Azerbaijan to be pro-Westernâ€

Of course, we want Azerbaijan to be pro-Western. But this is not "either everything or nothing" with Russia," US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morningstar said at the meeting with the students of Azerbaijan State Economic University, APA reports. He said what is important is that Azerbaijan is an independent and sovereign state.

“The major reason of our cooperation with Azerbaijan for more than 20 years is to assist in the protection of the country's independence and sovereignty. It is up to Azerbaijan to make decisions on these issues," he said.

Speaking about the Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, Ambassador said its repeal is in the competence of the Congress.

"What the US Presidential Administration can do is to suspend its legal force for a year and this is what is done. Currently. Section 907 affects the sale of military hardware and devices to Azerbaijan. I think the important spheres where we can cooperate are maritime security and struggle agains terrorism," he said.
