He said that only trucks laden with medicines and perishable food items, Azerbaijanis returning from Iran to Azerbaijan and the Iranian citizens leaving Azerbaijan for Iran are allowed to pass through the border checkpoints.
The Ambassador added that Poldasht-Shahtakhti checkpoint is open: “I hope the issue will be settled soon. We expect to hold meetings between the relevant agencies of the two countries to solve the problem.”
Iran issued a statement on the closure of Bilasuvar and Julfa border checkpoints on November 8. The statement issued on the behalf of Mohammad Ayatollahi, the spokesman for the embassy, says that this step was taken due to the fact that the Azerbaijani frontier guards have closed Poldasht-Shahtakhti checkpoint and the attempts made to open it have not produced results.
Seyed Mohammad Ayatollahi said as the checkpoint was not opened, Iran closed Bilasuvar and Julfa checkpoints after waiting for two days and informing the Azerbaijani side beforehand.
