EU publishes text of upcoming readmission agreement with Azerbaijan

According to the document, Azerbaijan shall also readmit persons, illegally present or residing in the Requesting Member State who have renounced the nationality of Azerbaijan in accordance with the national laws of the latter since entering the territory of a Member State, unless such persons have at least been promised naturalization by any Member State.

The commitments are mutual and the EU will also sign the agreement under similar conditions.

After Azerbaijan has given a positive reply to the readmission application, the competent diplomatic or consular representation of Azerbaijan shall, irrespective of the will of the person to be readmitted, free of charge and not later than within five working days, issue the travel document required for the return of the person to be readmitted with a period of validity of 150 days. Azerbaijan shall readmit, upon application by a Member State and without further formalities other than those provided for in this Agreement, any third-country nationals or stateless persons who do not, or who no longer, fulfill the conditions in force for entry to, presence in, or residence on, the territory of the Requesting Member State provided that it is proved.

Azerbaijan and the EU signed an agreement on visa facilitation in November last year. It will come into force after the readmission agreement is signed. Great Britain, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Denmark won’t sign the readmission agreement.

Commenting on the decision of the EU Council, Stefan Fule, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy said that the EU is ready to sign a readmission agreement with Azerbaijan: “It is important for the visa facilitation for the citizens.”
