Baku– APA. US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs held hearings on the South Caucasus. Azerbaijani embassy in the US told APA that chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia, Congressman Dan Burton chaired the hearings. Addressing the event congressmen, expert of Heritage Foundation Ariel Cohen, scholar at the Middle East Institute Alex Vatanka, Brenda Shaffer of the University of Haifa and expert on the region Michael Rubin underlined Azerbaijan’s positive role in the region’s security.
Discussions were held on the security environment of the South Caucasus, factors affecting the situation in the region, including foreign factors. It was underlined several times that Azerbaijan is a factor of stability in the region’s security environment, its contribution to the international energy security was underscored.
The South Caucasus corridor, of which Azerbaijan is the main initiator, was estimated as a contribution to the energy security of the US allies in Europe and the importance of the US political support in this direction was noted. At the same time, the speakers said that as a Muslim country, Azerbaijan has achieved great successes.
The importance of the South Caucasus for the US and enhancement of the relations of the US with the region were underlined during the discussions. Congressman Dan Burton, who chaired the hearings, called on the US Administration to be active in the region, especially to closely cooperate with Azerbaijan.
The US public, diplomatic corps and analytical circles took great interest in the hearings.
