Strasbourg. Fuad Gulubeyli – APA. Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland made a speech at the plenary meeting on the second day of the PACE session.

APA’s Europe bureau reports that in his speech, the Secretary General informed about the ongoing processes in Europe, the state of democracy and human rights and the importance of the Council of Europe’s cooperation with other European and international organizations in these fields.

The Secretary General also touched on the cases of corruption in the European countries: “Unfortunately, in many countries, there are persons, who abuse parliamentary immunity and powerful businessmen take advantage of it.”

Some attempt to win seats in the parliaments through secret ways. In this case control of the media outlets by some group, one-sided and protracted investigation of such cases by courts delay bringing these persons to justice. Unfortunately, we also witness such cases among the Council of Europe member states. PACE must raise voice against such facts. GRECO and MONEYVAL of the Council of Europe are our major means in struggling against corruption. I ask you to call on your national parliaments and governments to honor the commitments,” he said.
