Baku – APA. “Russia decided to suspend the lease of Gabala radar station primarily because the use of this military facility is not necessary. Obsolete radar stations are replaced by new generation stations “Voronezh”, a military source at the Russian Defense Ministry told RIA Novosti, APA reports.

The source said that new generation “Voronezh DM” missile warning system in Armavir was able to undertake all previous duties of Gabala RLS.

“The tests of the stations will be completed by the end of the year. The facility will start the combat turn in the first quarter of 2013.”

Earlier, Russian Defense Ministry had stated that they would consider the possibility of constructing new generation radar stations in Pechora, Barnaul, Yeniseysk and Olenogorsk.

Yesterday Russian Foreign Ministry sent an official note to Azerbaijan on suspension of Gabala radar station’s exploitation.
