President of European Council says status-quo in Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict is unacceptable

Baku – APA. Fuad Isgandarov, ambassador of Azerbaijan to Belgium and head of the Azerbaijani Mission to the EU, submitted his credentials to President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy on January 8. The Foreign Ministry’s press service told APA that Isgandarov said that Azerbaijan’s position in the development of the cooperation with the EU was principled, based on equal rights and interests of both sides. The ambassador underlined that the current situation on Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan was dangerous and posed threat to the regional stability.

Herman van Rompuy said EU-Azerbaijan relations are developing year-after-year, underlined the importance of Azerbaijan’s active participation in the Eastern Partnership and said progress was made in a number of spheres of cooperation. He expressed his confidence that Azerbaijan’s positive image in Europe will be strengthened with the continuation of political and economic reforms, said necessary foundation was laid for the formation of strong partnership relations with Azerbaijan. President of the European Council underlined his confidence that the upcoming presidential elections will be the most fair and transparent in the history of Azerbaijan, aspects of democracy will be improved in the independent country.

Herman van Rompuy said the EU welcomed the release of 87 prisoners under the pardon order of President Ilham Aliyev on December 26, 2012. Following this, the ambassador noted that the status-quo was unacceptable and it was discussed at the EU-Russia summit. He also said the EU intended to contribute to the settlement of the conflict.
