Baku. Victoria Dementeva – APA. “The Nagorno Karabakh conflict is not a “frozen” conflict, it is a conflict with a frozen solution, because it has a risk of escalation. The EU supports the efforts of OSCE towards the settlement of the conflict”, said EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia Philippe Lefort addressing Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy, APA reports. He said that the settlement of the conflict requires the political will and desire of the two sides to compromise: “The status-quo is unacceptable. It is important to achieve progress in this issue.”

Lefort informed the audience about the structure and activity of the EU, its cooperation with the South Caucasus countries, the role of the EU in the conflict between Russia and Georgia in 2008 and the efforts made by the EU on fight against the financial crisis in Europe.

Lefort characterized the EU’s interests on the South Caucasus on five major points. The first is the prevention of wars and armed conflicts in the region.

“Maintenance of stability and security in the region, development of the region is very important for the security of the European Union,” he said.

The other points cover energy cooperation, sharing of European values with the countries of the region, struggle against threats to security and terrorism.

Lefort will leave for Armernia on November 30.
