Azerbaijan develops new draft law on nuclear and radiation safety

Baku. Victoria Dementeva – APA. A new draft law on nuclear and radiation safety is being developed in Azerbaijan, said head of the State Agency on Nuclear and Radiological Activity Regulation of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Vugar Huseynov, APA reports.

According to him, the draft law made by the agency last year has been submitted to the Ministry of Emergency Situations and currently is being considered: “Some clauses of the draft law may be reconsidered in accordance with the organization’s norms due to EU-funded Twinning Project. Moreover, the draft contains the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Azerbaijan’s Cabinet of Ministers.”

In his turn, Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Faig Tagizadeh noted that the effective law on radiation safety in Azerbaijan was adopted in 1998 and made basing on the Soviet laws of 50-60s of the XX century: “Since then, many things – equipments and the level of health system have changed, new requirements and views appeared. Serious work must be carried out for the draft to meet international standards.”
