“Serious competition and struggles are taking place around the Middle Corridor,” Chairman of the Council of Elders of the Organization of Turkic States Binali Yildirim said during a panel discussion on the Middle Corridor held within the framework of the 13th Global Baku Forum, APA reports.
He noted that the volume of cargo transported through this corridor could be increased to 20 million tons.
“Looking at transport routes from Asia to Europe, we see that around 90% of transportation is still carried out by sea. Alternative routes are mainly the Northern and the Middle Corridors. Trade turnover between Europe and Asia amounts to approximately $3 trillion, which is a very large figure.
The share of the Middle Corridor is still relatively limited. Previously, the volume of cargo transported via this route was about 1 million tons, while now it has reached 5 million tons. However, the corridor’s potential is much greater, and the volume could be increased to 20 million tons.
In terms of time, the Middle Corridor is one of the shortest routes. Cargo can be delivered from East to West within 12–15 days through this route. Thus, it makes an important contribution to the development of both regional and global trade,” he said.
Binali Yildirim also noted that one of the other key projects is the TANAP gas pipeline.
“This project ensures the transportation of energy resources and has strategic importance. TANAP passes through the territories of several countries and contributes to regional energy security,” he added.
