Azerbaijan and Japan to further strengthen economic cooperation-UPDATED

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov paid a visit to Japan on June 9-10, 2026, and held a meeting with Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi on June 10, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.

According to the MFA, during the meeting, both ministers welcomed the development of bilateral relations over the more than 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992 and reaffirmed the importance of active and productive political dialogue, including high-level visits and political consultations.

Both ministers emphasized that the visit created an opportunity to further strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries and reaffirmed their intention to deepen cooperation in a number of areas, including diplomacy and the economy.

The Azerbaijani side expressed its appreciation for Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) and voiced hope for continued cooperation with Japan.

The Japanese side recognized the importance of Azerbaijan’s stability and prosperity in ensuring peace throughout the Caucasus region, and both sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation in the economic sphere.

The Japanese side welcomed Azerbaijan’s decision to unilaterally introduce a one-year visa-free regime for Japanese citizens in order to promote tourism and further expand economic, humanitarian and cultural ties. The sides confirmed that they would continue facilitating mutual travel by their citizens.

The sides welcomed the 12th meeting of the Azerbaijan-Japan Joint Economic Committee held in September 2025 with a view to further expanding trade and investment relations between the two countries and confirmed the necessity of holding the next meeting in the near future.

The sides welcomed the progress achieved to date in negotiations on the Japan-Azerbaijan Investment Agreement, which began in February 2019, and agreed to accelerate the negotiations with the aim of concluding the agreement in the near future.

The sides expressed their agreement on the use of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) to promote cooperation in the field of decarbonization and on holding the first meeting of the JCM Joint Committee in the near future.

The sides agreed on the importance of cooperation within the framework of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route aimed at strengthening regional and broader connectivity.

The sides highly appreciated the existence of long-term and close cooperation between the two countries in the development of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli oil and gas fields and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, involving Japanese companies. This demonstrates the significant benefits and positive outcomes of effective cooperation between the parties.

The sides reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s important role in ensuring stable energy supplies under the current international circumstances. The parties expressed their intention to further develop cooperation in the field of energy security, including maintaining stable supplies of crude oil originating from Azerbaijan. The sides emphasized the importance of maritime security.

The sides exchanged views on recent developments affecting economic resilience, economic security and the broader international environment and reaffirmed the importance of continuing dialogue and cooperation on issues of mutual interest.

The sides confirmed the continuation of bilateral cooperation on international platforms, including elections within international organizations, and expressed their determination to work jointly toward the early implementation of the reform of the United Nations Security Council, including the expansion of both permanent and non-permanent membership categories.

The sides emphasized the importance of respecting the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, including respect for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
