Israel calls on its citizens to avoid travels to Azerbaijan in anticipation of terrorist threats

The bureau cautioned the Israeli public that because of the increased threat of terror attacks against Israelis abroad, travels certain destinations should be avoided, including Egypt, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania and Venezuela.

The Israel Counter Terrorism Bureau is subordinated to the National Security Council of Israel. The Bureau deals with analyzing the international activeness of the international organizations, political situation in various countries. As a result of these analyses, the citizens of Israel are recommended to travel or not to a particular country.

On January 31, the US and UK also issued a warning over terrorist threats in Azerbaijan. There was no comment on the nature of the threat or source of the information.
Imad Mughniyah was killed on February 12, 2008 by a car bomb, planted inside the driver’s headrest, in the Kfar Suseh neighborhood of Damascus, Syria. Hezbollah leaders accused Israel in Mughniyah’s murder. Imad Mughniyah was a senior member of Lebanon’s Hezbollah organization. He was alternatively described as the head of its security section, a senior intelligence official and as a founder of the organization. Mugniyah has been associated with the Beirut barracks bombing and US embassy bombings, both of which took place in 1983 and killed over 350, as well as the kidnapping of dozens of foreigners in Lebanon in the 1980s. He was indicted in Argentina for his alleged role in the 1992 Israeli embassy attack in Buenos Aires. He organized kidnapping of Soviet diplomats – employees of the KGB’s residence in Beirut Oleg Spirin, Valeri Mirikov, as well as consulate employees Nikolay Svirski and Arkady Katkov in 1985 and killed one of the hostages a month later and released three others after his demands were met. Russian sources said Mughniyah also organized attack on the Russian embassy in Beirut in 2000. Palestinian Abu-Khurab, who was killed in shooting with the security of the diplomatic mission, had a note “I revenge Grozny”.
