UK Minister of State for Europe: Azerbaijan is an important partner for the UK

â€œThe British Government believes that EU membership, or greater integration without membership, should be open to all European countries that want it, and can meet the necessary criteria. That includes Azerbaijan,â€ he said.
David Lidington hailed the Association Agreement negotiations between the EU and Azerbaijan.
â€œI believe that the benefits of greater integration and the conclusion of an Association Agreement would be significant for Azerbaijan, most notably in terms of access of EU markets,â€ Minister said.

Touching on the forthcoming parliamentary elections ion Azerbaijan David Lidington said:
â€œThere is an important opportunity next month, with the holding of parliamentary elections, for Azerbaijan to prove to its neighbours and to the EU that although it is a young democracy it is able to respond to the challenge. We would like to see elections conducted in line with international standards, and for Azerbaijan to respond to the OSCEâ€™s recommendations from 2008, particularly on freedom of the media and freedom of assembly.â€

Speaking about the situation in the region, David Lidington said:
â€œWe would like a constructive relationship with Iran. But if Iran continues to reject the generous package of incentives, including direct support for a peaceful nuclear programme, then pressure through sanctions at the UN, EU and elsewhere will continue. This pressure is not an attempt at regime change, nor a precursor for military action. It is an attempt to demonstrate to Iranian leaders that they have a choice: come to the table and negotiate with the international community over your nuclear programme, or face further pressure and international isolation.â€

David Lidington also answered the questions of the students. Asked about the expectations from the OSCE summit in Astana, December 1-2 he said:
â€œOne can expect that the meeting will be efficient, unresolved conflicts, including Nagorno Karabakh, Transnistria conflicts will be discussed. It would be useful if some progress is achieved with respect to these conflicts,â€ he said.
