Baku. Viktoria Dementyeva – APA. “It would be tragic, if Nagorno Karabakh conflict was not solved within 40 years,” Special Representative of the European Union for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby said in his interview to the Kommersant, APA reports.
To the question “Does the extension of the term of deployment of Russian military base in Armenia for 49 years mean that the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh will be protracted for this period?” Semneby said the process of settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict is protracting too much and it poses threat to the countries of the region, neighbors of the region.
“This conflict does not exist in the vacuum. More efforts should be made to solve the conflict. We have recently observed incidents and shootings on the line of contact, the ceasefire regime should be strengthened. Of course, the ceasefire does not solve the problems, but it helps normalize the process of negotiations,” he said.

Peter Semneby refused to comment on the agreement between Russia and Armenia to extend the term of deployment of the military base.
“This is the affair of Russia and Armenia. Of course, we are interested in this issue. I consider that it is necessary to hold consultations with various sides and persuade the neighbors that this agreement does not pose any threat to them. Military solution to Nagorno Karabakh or any other conflict is inadmissible,” he said.
