Yemeni president, U.S. senior diplomat discuss fighting terrorism

Baku-APA. Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and visiting U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns discussed cooperation in fighting terrorism here on Tuesday, APA reports quoting news.xinhuanet.com website.

The talks, which was held at the Yemeni Presidential Palace in Sanaa, aimed at "reaffirming the U.S. pledges on supporting the Yemeni government’s efforts in combating terrorism and enhancing security, stability and development," according to the report.

Burns reaffirmed his country’s support to the Yemeni government ’s efforts in fighting the terrorist groups and overcoming challenges on development and reforms. He also pointed out the importance of the upcoming donor countries meeting in Riyadh.

President Saleh spoke highly of the mutual cooperation between his country and the United States, hailing the U.S. position in supporting the security, stability, unity and development of Yemen.

Yemen has come under increasing pressure after the Yemen-based al-Qaida wing claimed responsibility for a failed attempt to blow up a U.S. passenger plane bound for Detroit last year.
