Chairman of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan Ramiz Rzayev said in his welcoming speech that they would discuss a number of important issues related to the appealing procedure during the elections, APA reports. He said Azerbaijan’s main goal was to hold elections in accordance with the national Constitution, international conventions and European standards.

Chief of the department of the Presidential Administration for work with law-enforcement organizations Fuad Alasgarov said new mechanism was prepared for reviewing the election appeals on the basis of amendments made to the Electoral Code in 2008 and they established expert groups to review the appeals. He said there was activeness among the society and political parties on the eve of the elections and 14 parties united their forces in five blocs.

Secretary of the Venice Commission Thomas Markert also addressed the conference. He said the Council of Europe attached great importance to free elections. “I would like to inform you about the Venice Commission. It closely participates in the process of the Constitutional reforms, for example in Georgia, but we have a wider activity. We made recommendations to the office of the Human Rights Commissioner as well and now we are working on the election legislation. We submitted our proposals on the amendments to the electoral codes of many countries, including Azerbaijan and these proposals are among the issues we discuss today. The Venice Commission is working together with other institutions of the Council f Europe, including the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and local self-administration organizations”.
