Russia, Armenia sign agreement making Russian military base responsible for Armenia’s security

Baku – APA. Russia and Armenia signed a protocol for prolongation of the term of deployment of the Russian military base in Gyumri, Armenia. The agreement was signed by the Russian and Armenian defense ministers Anatoly Serdyukov and Seyran Ohanian after the meeting between Russian and Armenian presidents Dmitry Medvedev in Yerevan, APA reports quoting News Armenia agency.
The protocol contains amendments to the bilateral agreement signed in 1995 about the Russian military base in Armenia. The term of deployment was extended from 25 to 49 years beginning from 1995. The most important point concerning the national security interests of Azerbaijan is that the Russian military base takes responsibility for the security of Armenia. For that Russia will supply Armenia with modern arms and military techniques. Use of military forces at the Russian military base will be regulated by the bilateral agreements.
Russia’s 102nd military base was deployed in northern Gyumri city of Armenia. It comes under command of the Caucasian Action Group of the North Caucasus defense command of the Russian Federation. There are C-300 missiles, Mig-29 fighters alongside with other military equipments at the military base. 5 000 troops were deployed there.
