According to the document, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan have undertaken commitment to prevent the pollution of the Caspian Sea and restoration of the marine environment.

The Convention was adopted with the support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The members of the convention hold regular meetings, discuss the implementation of the agreements and future activities. The first meeting was held in Baku in May, 2007. The participants of the meeting held discussions on the four protocols to be included into the Convention. The protocols cover concrete commitments for the protection of the biological diversity, response and cooperation in combating oil pollution incidents, protection of the Caspian Sea against land-based sources of pollution.

Two of the protocols are expected to be adopted during the meeting in Kazakhstan.

12 August – the day when the Convention came into force is marked as “Caspian Day” in the littoral states.
