Azerbaijan nominates its candidacy for UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Cultural and Natural Heritage

It must be noted that the Committee is one of the authoritative bodies of the organization. The issue on UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List is being discussed at this Committee and appropriate decisions are made.

Azerbaijani membership in this Committee will make opportunity for our country to play significant role in the discussion of issues related to protection of the cultural and natural heritage of the world, as well as help to function actively in direction of including Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage into UNESCO’s World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.

Note that, elections for Intergovernmental Committee was held during 3rd session of participant states of UNESCO World Heritage Convention held in Paris on June 22-24 of current year.

For the purpose of achievement the support for Azerbaijan’s candidacy appropriate works have been done and meetings were held by Azerbaijan Republic’s National Commission on UNESCO, Standing Representation of Azerbaijan Republic under UNESCO and diplomatic representations of Azerbaijan Republic functioning abroad.

Today, as a result of expedient work carried out by Foreign Ministry and other related organs, Azerbaijan has been selected as a member of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Cultural and Natural Heritage on 2010-2014.

UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Cultural and Natural Heritage consists of 24 representatives. Along with Azerbaijan, Armenia which nominated its candidacy as well, sustained a defeat during elections because of minority of votes.
