APA reports that OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Kanat Saudabayev said this at the international conference in Ashgabat on the problems of disarmament in the Central Asia and Caspian region. OSCE Chairman-in-Office said joint cooperation and mutual assistance is very important in combating these challenges.

“Kazakhstan attaches great importance to the restriction of the military activity in the Caspian. We consider that the Caspian should be the corridor of friendship, stability and mutual confidence. In this context the demilitarization of the Caspian Sea is the best variant. But taking into account the current geopolitical situation in the region in connection with extremism, terrorism, illicit drug turnover and other challenges, since 2004 Kazakhstan has been initiating to establish a five-party mechanism to control the arms in the Caspian Sea, determine stable balance and limit of arms. We consider that these measures would be the most effective means to establish mutual confidence, prevent conflict and develop peace cooperation of our countries,” he said.

Ambassador-at-large Abbasali Hasanov is representing Azerbaijan at the conference.
