Solemn opening ceremony of Austrian embassy in Baku

Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger, Austrian Economy Minister Reinhold Mitterlehner, members of the delegation accompanying them, Azerbaijani Minister of Communication and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov, Deputy Foreign Minister Vagif Sadigov, parliamentarians, culture and public figures attended the opening ceremony.

Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger and Azerbaijani Minister of Communication and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov cut the red ribbon symbolizing the opening of the embassy.

Ali Abbasov said being chairman of Azerbaijan-Austria intergovernmental commission he had looked forward to that day. He said the visit of a large Austrian delegation to Baku was a significant event.

He said after Azerbaijan gained its independence cooperation was established with Austria in various spheres.
“Austria is Azerbaijan’s partner in Europe’s energy supply,” Minister said and touched on the cultural relations between the countries. He mentioned that "Arshin Mal Alan" (The Cloth Peddler) by Uzeyir Hajibayov had been staged in Austria.

Addressing the ceremony Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said Austria’s honorary consulate was opened in Baku 112 years ago and that consulate functioned as Austria’s representation in Russia’s oil industry.
“Now we are opening our embassy in the developing Azerbaijan. Our country intends to extend its relations with Azerbaijan in all spheres,” he said.

Minetti quartet from Austria performed works by Heiden, Schubert and Beethoven.
