Azerbaijani Foreign Minister meets with his Italian counterpart

Baku. Lachin Sultanova â€“ APA. Azerbaijanâ€™s Foreign Minister, who is visiting Italy, met with Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, Foreign Ministryâ€™s press service told APA. The sides expressed their satisfaction with the level of the mutual cooperation, underlined the importance of the development of economic relations.

Franco Frattini said he is pleased that Italy is the first trade partner of Azerbaijan and expressed his confidence that it will continue.

While discussing the issues of regional security Elmar Mammadyarov gave information about the consequences of Nagorno Karabakh conflict and the process of negotiations. The Minister said Azerbaijan accepted the updated Madrid principles for the resolution of the conflict and underlined that it is the appropriate basis for the resolution of the conflict. Elmar Mammadyarov said peace and stability are impossible in the region unless Nagorno Karabakh conflict is solved and added that the resolution of the conflict will pave the way for mutual cooperation and understanding in the region, prosperity of the region.

Franco Frattini said he agrees with his Azerbaijani counterpart and Italy supports the current process of negotiations.

Energy security was one of the main topics of discussion. Frattini underlined Azerbaijanâ€™s role in the energy security of Europe.

Elmar Mammadyarov gave information about the present and future energy projects.

Other issues of mutual interest, particularly issues of security in the region and Europe were discussed at the meeting.
