Roundtable “Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict: outcomes of 2009 and future prospects” takes place

Baku – APA. Center for Strategic Studies under Azerbaijani President held a roundtable on the theme “Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict: outcomes of 2009 and future prospects” within the framework of the project with The First News Information Agency, the center’s press service told APA. The participants touched on Nagorno Karabakh conflict, steps taken for its solution in 2009, meetings of Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents, activity of OSCE Minsk Group. They consider that there is positive dynamics in the negotiations within the framework of the Minsk Group and this dynamics gives hope that some results will be achieved in 2010. It was also noted that 2009 is the year of intensive talks, though no concrete results have been achieved, serious work is being done on some principles. Turkey’s joining the process of negotiations was regarded as a positive political moment.

Touching on Turkey-Armenia relations, recent happenings in the South Caucasus region, the experts said serious geopolitical changes happen in the world after the August events of 2008. Regarding the protocols signed by Turkey and Armenia, participants of the round table said there was no mutual trust between the two countries and these documents remained “dead”.

The experts said Moscow Declaration and Madrid Principles could be a launch pad for positive results in future and Azerbaijan wouldn’t leave its fair position. The participants criticized non-constructive position of Armenia in the negotiation process over the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

Azerbaijan-Russia, Russia-US relations, powerful countries’ role in the conflict solutions, energy projects, intensification of the people’s diplomacy, security and other issues important for the Azerbaijan’s geopolitics were discussed at the round table.

Officials of the Presidential Administration, members of the parliament, experts of the Strategic Research Center, scientists and education officials, NGO representatives, media bosses, experts of the regional and international relations attended the round table.
