Eastern Partnership program is not a tool of EU enlargement - Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said this on Thursday

"The Eastern Partnership program is not a tool of the EU enlargement," Merkel said.

"We should not cherish vain illusions, which may not become a reality later," Merkel said in the Bundestag on the eve of her participation in the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga.

According to the Chancellor, Ukraine and Georgia should make "serious efforts" to implement the Association Agreement with the European Union, including with regard to the fight against corruption, strengthening of economic and judicial systems.

Speaking about the possibility of abolishing the visa regime, Merkel noted that "facilitation of the visa regime is possible only if all the necessary conditions are met."

Angela Merkel also stressed that the Eastern Partnership program was not directed against anyone, including Russia
