The police officer, Celal Yilmaz, 51, was recorded on video shooting to death motorcyclist Ahmet Sulusoglu, 32, following an argument in Istanbul’s Halkali district in August, police said.
In his testimony, Yilmaz alleged that Sulusoglu had stopped his car with a motorcycle, which ensued into an argument. The deputy police chief added that the deceased pulled a gun on him while he parked the car and he shot him in self defense.
Prosecutor Talip Kalkan urged the court to order the arrest of Yilmaz, saying the accused had exceeded the limits of legitimate self-defense.
The court ruled in favor of the prosecutor, ordering the arrest of Yilmaz on charges of "premeditated murder under unjust provocation".
On August 17, Yilmaz was taken into custody after calling the police emergency line, informing them that he shot and killed Sulusoglu in an alleged act of self defense. A week later, the Bakirkoy Penal Court of Peace set Yilmaz free pending trial.
