9 die of bootleg alcohol poisoning in Istanbul

Dozens of people were hospitalized in in the past three days with complaints of severe stomach ache, vomiting and loss of vision. While nine of them have died so far, dozens are still receiving treatment at various hospitals.

Police were alarmed at the hospitalizations and detained 14 people who are accused of being involved in bootleg alcohol production and sale. The suspects are still being interrogated by the homicide bureau of the Istanbul Police Department.

Police officials said samples from the bootleg alcohol bottles seized from the suspects were sent to Council of Forensic Medicine for examination. They say the death toll may increase as there are those who are in critical condition at the hospitals.
