The Spanish government has approved a €719 million investment in a national project to create an artificial intelligence (AI) gigafactory. This was announced in a press release from the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Public Service, APA reports.

According to him, "The Council of Ministers today authorized a €719 million investment <...> in a public-private consortium that will develop a cutting-edge AI gigafactory and will submit a bid to the competition that the European Commission will soon announce." According to the head of the department, Oscar López, this investment confirms the Spanish government's commitment to "technological sovereignty, reindustrialization, and leadership in reliable and sustainable AI."

According to the minister, European access to advanced computing power will enable companies to innovate faster and compete more successfully in the market, while the scientific sector will gain access to infrastructure, which remains expensive today. Among the goals of the initiative, the country's authorities highlighted, among other things, reducing technological dependence and ensuring that AI development is carried out in accordance with European standards.

The ministry added that AI gigafactories are massive centers designed to house hundreds of thousands of graphics processing units.
