The idea of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder serving as a mediator representing the European Union in negotiations with Russia has not been accepted, The Guardian reports.

Germany’s Minister for European Affairs Gunther Krichbaum stated that such a mediator “must be a person acceptable to both sides,” and that Schröder does not meet this criterion.

He added that Schröder had not demonstrated in the past “the ability to act as a neutral and fair mediator,” and that his close ties with Vladimir Putin undermine his credibility for the role: “Close friendship relations do not help you to be perceived as a fair mediator.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also firmly rejected the proposal. He stated that there are more suitable candidates for the role: “No, we do not support this. We absolutely do not support this candidacy.”

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also recalled Schröder’s ties with Russian state companies and said that his appointment as a mediator would not be possible.
