The Pentagon plans to present concrete plans for the partial withdrawal of its troops from the European defense system at NATO headquarters in Brussels in June, the newspaper Welt am Sonntag reported, citing a senior US Defense Department official, APA reports.
"These changes will be incorporated into our force and capabilities proposal at the next NATO force generation conference," he told the publication. The next such conference will take place in June. "We want to provide Allies with the necessary information and clarity to accelerate the transition to a European defense as quickly and effectively as possible, where Allies assume primary responsibility for Europe's conventional defense," the Pentagon spokesman added.
Germany and other European NATO allies, the newspaper points out, have long been aware of the US's intention to abandon its role as the main protector. However, German government circles assumed this process would be gradual and coordinated. Now, Washington is effectively depriving Europeans of a lengthy transition period, Welt am Sonntag notes.
US President Donald Trump, as a Pentagon spokesperson explained, "always reserves the right to act as he deems necessary in any situation." The Pentagon's mission, he explained, is to "be proactive and plan for actions in accordance with the National Defense Strategy should the United States face multiple conflicts simultaneously," the department spokesperson stated.
