Criminals stole about €10 million from the vault of a Deutsche Bank branch in the city of Lubeck (the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein) in northern Germany, APA reports citing Bild newspaper.

According to the publication, four criminals easily entered the bank premises with empty suitcases, stayed overnight and unhinderedly opened 326 cells. The underground storage facility of the credit institution has about 2.5 thousand cells located on two levels, there are no cameras or motion sensors. The lockers are essentially ordinary mailboxes that can be easily opened with simple tools. As noted by the police, the criminals rented the cells in advance to gain access to the basement.

The criminals waited until the bank closed and filled the suitcases with cash, gold and securities. The alarm did not go off. The sirens only started sounding when the criminals left the building in Lübeck and fled from the backyard in at least two cars. Following the incident, the bank stepped up its security measures. Now, customers are escorted to the vault by bank employees and security guards.

A lawyer representing dozens of affected clients believes that Deutsche Bank is responsible because the criminals managed to hide in the building unnoticed. "The question is not whether Deutsche Bank made a mistake, but how this was possible," he told Bild. According to the newspaper, the bank does not want to compensate for the damage.
