The European Union has officially launched accession negotiations for Moldova. This was announced by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos following the first intergovernmental conference with the Republic in Luxembourg, APA reports.

"Moldova has opened the first cluster of 'pillars' in its negotiations with the European Union," the European Commissioner said. The decision to launch negotiations with Moldova was entirely dependent on a similar decision regarding Ukraine, as the two countries are part of the same enlargement group and must complete all stages simultaneously.

The "fundamental provisions" negotiating cluster includes five chapters: justice, freedom, and security; legal and fundamental rights; financial control; public procurement; and statistics. In all these areas, candidates must fully align their legislation with EU standards. To join the EU, a country must complete negotiations on 33 chapters, grouped into five clusters.
