A train driver has died and 89 people have been injured to varying degrees after two passenger trains collided in the UK, about 100 kilometers north of London, British Transport Police said, BBC reports.
The incident occurred yesterday at around 17:15 local time on a railway line south of the city of Bedford. Both trains involved in the collision belonged to East Midlands Railway and were heading to London St Pancras station.
Footage shared on social media by one of the passengers shows that the front of one train crashed into the rear of another train. Photos from the scene show that at least one carriage derailed.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer offered condolences to the family of the person who died and to those seriously injured in a statement regarding the incident.
The East of England Ambulance Service said large resources were deployed to the scene. More than 20 ambulances and six air ambulances were sent to the area.
According to the information, one person died at the scene, 11 people suffered very serious injuries, 22 were seriously injured, and 56 others sustained minor injuries.
Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of the RMT rail workers’ union, said the organization was devastated to learn of the tragic death of the train driver and former union representative.
The causes of the incident are being investigated.
