French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he would send additional troops for supporting of peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan within ISAF (International Security Assistance Force). He announced his decision at the supper attended by the heads of state. “We decided to strengthen French military presence in the eastern Afghanistan with one more battalion (800 soldiers)â€. He said France would take command of troops in the central part of Afghanistan in the summer.

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer stated that NATO family was developing its enlargement and left its doors open. He said decisions on the NATO enlargement would be taken on Thursday, but didn’t announce concrete names. The Secretary General underlined the NATO’s involvement in the peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan henceforth. He touched upon the Kosovo issue at the end of his speech. “Stable and multinational Kosovo is one of the targets of NATOâ€. Scheffer said the Bucharest Summit was also focusing on the prevention of the new threats in the 21st century. The alliance will focus its opportunities to counterattack the cyber attacks and take part in the maintenance of energy security. Third is the importance of missile defense. NATO will play a special role in these fields.

Macedonian delegation decided to leave the NATO Bucharest summit after it lost a chance to be invited to NATO as Greece tackled Macedonia to join NATO. Macedonian delegation decided to leave the summit unfinished after the first half of the Thursday session. Greece stated that it would not recognise the country named as Macedonia because of cognominal region in Greece. Athens accepts Macedonian title as a violation of its terrritoial integrity.
